Sunday was an interesting day. I slept in until about 2pm, which was fantastic. I got up and did some laundry then went out to buy a new pair of sunglasses, which I can only explain to be NEON Orange. See for yourself…
Anyway…I’m pretty sure they are my good luck charm. On Friday before I left work, a woman I work with mentioned she had just seen a post about an open role in the playSister Mary Ignatius Explains It All For Youby Christopher Durang and was curious if I was interested. Of course I said yes. I think theatre has been the missing piece of the puzzle in the 4 months I’ve been in London so far. After some back and forth she got me the info I needed and it was just a matter of whether or not I was actually going to show up.
Well 6pm came on Sunday and I decided I was going to make it down to the 7pm auditions. I showed up to a virtually empty pub called the Hoop and Grapes just off of Fleet Street downtown. I grabbed a pint of Spitfire since I was about 15 minutes early. After a few minutes of trying to wrap my head around the Cricket match on the TV, a woman came downstairs asking if anyone had arrived for auditions. That’s my cue! I went upstairs with her and chatted a bit as I started to look over the two scenes I was to read. Over the course of the next 15 minutes three more actors showed up and went through the same motions.
When it came time to read, we went in order of appearance. I chugged the remainder of my pint to take the edge off and hopped up there. I felt pretty good considering it was my first audition in 6 months. I could have certainly done better but by no means did I do a poor job. The other guys came up and did their readings next followed by the director asking us all to do one of the two scenes again while giving us each a bit of direction. Once again I was up first. She asked me to do the pagaent scene very panto. I just stared blankly for a moment, which prompted her to ask “Do you know what I mean?”. Of course in my head I did but nobody had ever given me that as direction before. So in order to be sure I did what she asked I had her explain. One of the other auditioners piped up saying something about gesturing a lot. I took that and ran with it. If there’s something I know I do well it’s being physically expressive. This is the point I’m pretty sure I nailed it. The other guys got their direction and also did a good job. (Ironically the guy who spoke up about what panto is got the same direction and didn’t quite execute based on the descriptionhe had given me.) He still was good nonetheless.
We all left, being told we’d hear back that night. Low and behold about an hour later I got a call from Kat, the director, simply saying “Wanna be in my play?!”. Um…YES please and thank you.
I don’t know exactly what the process or performances will hold but regardless I think it’s good for me to get in a routine for a bit.
